Description
Bahrain Sees Arrests, Clashes, Bombs Ahead of October Election "Bahrain could be seen as a country in an emergency" were the words of Nabeel Rajab, head of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, following a number of arrests on August 13 and the ensuing riots that rocked the Gulf kingdom. Rajab's comments were carried by the UAE's The National where he described the situation as tense. Preliminary news reports said that four Shiite activist leaders were arrested, this number quickly rose to 10 and now it has been announced by the Bahraini authorities that 23 Shiite leaders are being held. Several hundred followers have also been detained. Those held have been portrayed by officials as being part of a plot to overthrow the ruling system of a strong U.S. ally; Bahrain hosts the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet. Being Shiite, suspicions circle that the alleged coup plotters would have been a gateway to Iranian influence in its tiny neighbor.
